Paul Summergrad, M.D. is an internationally recognized psychiatrist and healthcare leader with decades of experience in clinical care, academic medicine, executive leadership, and consulting. Dr. Summergrad is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, Tufts University School of Medicine, and Chairman Emeritus of the department of psychiatry at Tufts Medical Center. From 2004 until 2023 he was the Dr. Frances S. Arkin Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine and Psychiatrist-in-Chief at Tufts Medical Center. Dr. Summergrad served as the 141st President of the American Psychiatric Association from 2014-2015 and is a past president of the American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry. He served as the Secretary for Finances and as a member of the Executive Committee of the World Psychiatric Association from 2020-2026.

A leader in medical psychiatric disorders and care, Dr. Summergrad’s research focuses on medical-psychiatric co-morbidity, and healthcare policy. He has published extensively with over 175 peer review publications, book chapters and other communications. He has edited three books: The Textbook of Medical Psychiatry, Integrated Care in Psychiatry, and Primary Care Psychiatry.

The recipient of numerous honors, he is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a Fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists, the American College of Physicians and of the Royal College of Physicians-Edinburgh. He received the Distinguished Faculty Award from Tufts University School of Medicine in 2015 and the Leadership Award of the American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry in 2018. He was elected to the Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, their highest honor, in 2020. In May of 2024 he received the American Psychiatric Association  Distinguished Service Award and was invested as Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry by Tufts University in 2026.

After completing his residencies in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital and Boston University School of Medicine and in psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Summergrad served as Chief of Inpatient Psychiatric Services at MGH from 1987-1998 and as Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He is board certified in Psychiatry and Internal Medicine.
